Economics Training

In conjunction with the Department of Economics, University of Stellenbosch, the BER presents regular courses in practical economics, either on the University premises to groups of interested individuals or in-house to companies and other interested organizations. This is a course presented to those who have identified the need for a better understanding of the basic working of the economy.  The course leader is Andrie Schoombee of the Department of Economics.
 
 
IN-HOUSE COURSES

On request, the course can be presented on site  to employees of a specific company/institution. Such an in-house course can be adapted to meet specific needs. The fee structure of the in-house course is as follows:

 
Up to 10 delegates: R70 000
11-15 delegates: R86 000
16-20 delegates: R96 000
21-25 delegates: R104 000
26-30 delegates R109 000

Course objectives

PRACTICAL ECONOMICS IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONTEXT

The objectives of the course are:

  • To acquaint delegates with economic terminology.
  • To explain the complexities of interrelationship between economic variables.
  • To enable delegates to understand and interpret the economic policies of government.
  • To facilitate learning through interaction.
Who should attend
  • Those wishing to gain more insight into the working of the economy.
  • Those involved in planning, requiring a basic background in economics on which to base their decision making.
  • The course is aimed at those who do not hold economics degrees.

  • Substitution of delegates may be made at any time, but there will be no refunds for cancellations two weeks prior to the course.
  • Course fee of R6 630.00 includes a text book, notes, lunches and refreshments, but excludes travel and accommodation. Fees for the in-house course are indicated above.
  • Cheques must be made payable to the Bureau for Economic Research.

Day One
  • What economics is all about. A discussion of the economic concepts and how economic performance is measured.
  • The central government's budget: South African fiscal policy.
  • Inflation, inflation targets and interests rates: South African monetary policy.
  • Practical session.

Day Two

  • The impact  of the world economy on South Africa: the balance of payments and exchange rates.
  • The interaction between financial and real economic variables e.g. how do interest rates and exchange rates affect expenditure and exports in the South African context?
  • Long-term economic growth, income distribution and poverty: the current South African context and prospects for the future.
  • The view of the BER on the short-term course of the South African economy.
  • Practical session.
Lecturers

Lecturing staff consists of BER economists and senior lecturers from the University's Department of Economics.
