In conjunction with the Department of Economics, University of Stellenbosch, the
BER presents regular courses in practical economics, either on the University premises
to groups of interested individuals or in-house to companies and other interested
organizations. This is a course presented to those who have identified the need
for a better understanding of the basic working of the economy. The course leader
is Andrie Schoombee of the Department
of Economics.

PRACTICAL ECONOMICS IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONTEXT
The objectives of the course are:
- To acquaint delegates with economic terminology.
- To explain the complexities of interrelationship between economic variables.
- To enable delegates to understand and interpret the economic policies of government.
- To facilitate learning through interaction.

- Those wishing to gain more insight into the working of the economy.
- Those involved in planning, requiring a basic background in economics on which to
base their decision making.
- The course is aimed at those who do not hold economics degrees.

- Certification: Attendance certificate.
- Closing date for enrolment is two weeks prior to the commencement of the
course.
- Substitution of delegates may be made at any time, but there will be no refunds
for cancellations two weeks prior to the course.

performance is measured.
- The central government's budget: South African fiscal policy.
- Inflation, inflation targets and interests rates: South African monetary policy.
- Practical session.
Day Two
- The impact of the world economy on South Africa: the balance of payments and
exchange rates.
- The interaction between financial and real economic variables e.g. how do interest
rates and exchange rates affect expenditure and exports in the South African context?
- Long-term economic growth, income distribution and poverty: the current South African
context and prospects for the future.
- The view of the BER on the short-term course of the South African economy.
- Practical session.
