FNB/BER Consumer Confidence Index

A quarterly report that contains the latest reading of the FNB/BER Consumer Confidence Index as well as a brief discussion on the implications of the results. Detailed data on consumer confidence is provided, disaggregated by income category and population group.

The FNB/BER Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) combines the results of three questions posed to adults living in predominantly urban areas in South Africa, namely the expected performance of the economy, the expected financial position of households and the rating of the appropriateness of the present time to buy durable goods, such as furniture, appliances and electronic equipment. Consumer confidence is expressed as a net balance, which is calculated as the percentage of respondents expecting an improvement / good time to buy durable goods less the percentage expecting a deterioration / bad time to buy durable goods. Business Confidence Index

The BER takes the percentage of respondents that rates prevailing conditions as satisfactory as indicator or proxy of business confidence.

Consumer Confidence Index

Detailed data on consumer confidence is provided, disaggregated by income, LSM and population groups as well as per province.

Purchasing Managers' Index

The Absa Purchasing Managers’ Index™ (PMI™) compiled by the Bureau for Economic Research (BER).

Building Confidence Index

The index can vary between zero (indicating an extreme lack of confidence) and 100 (indicating extreme confidence).

Civil Confidence Index

The FNB/BER Civil Confidence Index reflects the state of business conditions in the civil engineering industry.

The FNB/BER Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) increased to -12 in the second quarter of 2024, after improving from -17 to -15 index points in the first quarter of 2024. Although consumer sentiment remained decidedly negative in 2024Q2, the latest consumer confidence reading is the highest in 18 months and points to a gradual improvement in consumer spending compared to the weak performance recorded over the last year.

After slipping from -16 to -17 index points in the fourth quarter of 2023, the FNB/BER Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) improved to -15 in the first quarter of 2024. The latest reading points to a consumer still under pressure. However, consumer sentiment is significantly higher than the -23 reading recorded during the first quarter of 2023 when stage-6 load-shedding, surging food prices, and successive interest rate hikes rocked consumer confidence.
