FNB Civil Confidence Index Documents

Following a gain of 5 points in 2Q2015, the FNB/BER Civil Confidence Index moved back by 5 points in 3Q2015 to 39. The current level of the index still indicates that more than 60 per cent of respondents are dissatisfied with prevailing business conditions. Confidence was lower due to continued weak growth in construction activity and profitability. In addition, the outlook for the remainder of 2015 and into 2016 deteriorated with demand for new work becoming scarcer.

After dropping to 39 points in 1Q2015, the FNB/BER Civil Confidence Index recovered somewhat to 44 points in 2Q2015. However, the rise in confidence is deceiving in that the state of the civil construction industry, as implied by the underlying data, seems to have worsened during the quarter.

After rising to 59 last quarter, the FNB/BER civil confidence index shed 20 points to register a level of 39 in 1Q2015. Confidence was lower largely due to a sharp slowdown in construction activity. In addition, the outlook for construction activity in the short term, particularly for new work, deteriorated.
