After a marked increase in 1Q12, the RMB/BER BCI fell by 11 points to a level of 41 in the second quarter. Business confidence declined in four of the five sectors making up the RMB/BER BCI. Confidence fell sharply in the retail trade and manufacturing sectors. In the case of building contractors, almost the entire first quarter improvement in sentiment was reversed in the second quarter. The sharp drop in business confidence does not bode well for prospective private sector investment in particular and economic growth in general during the second half of 2012.
